Dog Confused Why Owner Abandoned Her After Giving Birth

We can only assume how hard it might be for a dog who was once loved and cared for to be brought to a shelter. These dogs, and other animals as well, are completely confused and have no idea why they are away from their owners, not knowing they were the ones who placed them there.

Unfortunately, stories of abandoned and neglected animals can be heard very often, and we can never understand how can there be people who would give up on their pets just like that.

Melody is a cute mama dog who is an abandoned pet. Last month, just after she gave birth to a litter of ten puppies, she was placed at a Texas shelter. She was visibly thin and undernourished. Even though she was sad to be left behind, the staff was happy that she and her puppies were no longer near the owner who didn’t take proper care of her.

Melody knew she had to be strong for her puppies, and although she was very thin, she made sure her babies are well nourished.

Patti Dawson, who runs Dallas DogRRR – Rescue.Rehab.Reform, heard about Melody’s situation from an employee from the shelter and she simply couldn’t take the poor mother off her mind.

“A friend of mine who works at the shelter sent me her picture; she knows that I have a soft spot for the mamas at the shelter,” Dawson told The Dodo. “I just couldn’t stop thinking about Melody and her puppies. Her will to survive and take care of her puppies, as skinny as she was, is amazing.”

The problem with dogs like Melody is that the chances for them being adopted are pretty low. One of the reasons is because they are female and with their puppies weaning, the chances are even lower.

“She was nearing her deadline,” Patti shared. “So I put a plea out on Facebook looking for a foster. We had a foster that ended up stepping up for her and the puppies.”

After Melody and her puppies were taken in with the foster parents her situation changed for the better. She regained her strength and gained some weight. She is a happy dog because she and her puppy are now at a safe and comfortable place.

“They’re thriving,” Patti said. “Melody is adjusting to the home and putting on weight. Her puppies are good and chunky. The transition was perfect.”

We hope that the time for this brave mother and her puppies to be adopted by a forever family we come very soon.

While Melody was lucky to be fostered by compassionate people who love her and her babies, the biggest issue is that there are a great number of dogs like her who don’t share her destiny and spend their days in shelters.

In order to change this we should always consider adoption when looking for a pet.
