People share 95% of their DNA with gorillas and a silverback gorilla named Ambam from the Port Lympe Zoo in Kent, England, makes the resemblance with humans more obvious than ever by standing on his back feet. But, not only he can stand, but also walk like a man.

This makes him a real attraction for the visitors of the zoo who are left in awe any time they witness this unusual sight. What is interesting is that this isn’t the first time for a gorilla to show off his walking skills at this park. Ambam’s father was able to do it as well.

When he is not busy strolling around, Ambam does everything a normal gorilla does, and that’s eating bananas and hanging around with others of his kind.

The Port Lympe Zoo was founded by the British gambling magnate John Victor Aspinwall and used to be a private zoo, but today it’s a wildlife preserve and is the home of great number of animals, many of which are endangered species. That is why the zoo is also a breeding facility where the staff helps the breeding of many animals among which black rhinos and African elephants.

The most important of all is the gorilla enclosure they refer to as the Palace of the Apes.  The large breeding family of western lowland gorillas that call this area home is remarkable, because all species of gorillas are seriously endangered.

This gorilla we all love is pretty huge, both in weight and height. He stands six feet tall and is great at mimicking humans.

Ambam does this not because he’s about to lead a revolution like Cesar in the latest Planet of the Apes films. No, he’s learned this behavior by observation.

Experts believe Ambam learned this behavior from his father who used to stand and walk, or he might be imitating humans by observing them. But besides the reason behind it, the gorilla’s behavior catches the attention of the people who visit the zoo just to see him.

Ambam isn’t just standing like people, but he’s strolling around like us, too. Stiff-backed, legs straight, and hands at his side, Ambam will walk around like this seemingly just for fun.

It is interesting that his sister does this too, although not that often as her sibling.

Gorillas walk on their knuckles. Typically they move on their arms and legs, but some of them can stand and walk up to 3 meters. In Ambam’s case the distance is much longer.
