In Houston, Texas, an elementary school teacher named Caleb Schaffer arrived to work one morning and spotted a dog sitting outside all alone. Schaffer recalls: “He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me.” Schaffer had to work, so he squeezed past the dog and headed inside. Later on, he went back outside to check on him, but he was not there. Someone had called animal control, but the officers failed to catch the canine. The next morning, the very same dog was found by Schaffer, waiting in front of the school doors once again! He recognized Schaffer, and followed him eagerly to his car thanks to some tofu.

Schaffer drove the Labrador mix back to his apartment. While his wife cared for the dog, whom they had named Clive, the school teacher finished his morning classes and took the rest of the afternoon off. However, the couple were unable to take him in – they already own 2 other dogs in a small apartment. None of the animal rescue groups would take the dog in either.

But because Clive needed immediate medical care, Schaffer drove him all the way to the animal shelter located in Harris County. While Clive received a medicated bath, Schaffer tried to reach out online for help.

Luckily, the Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption came to Clive’s aid. In addition, his new foster parents were all the way in Houston, Texas. The animal rescue’s volunteers ferried Clive all the way from the shelter and to his new foster home. Clive healed quickly, in both spirit and health thanks to the couple’s loving care. He was a very special canine, and would make a great companion.

Schaffer would always remember his meeting with Clive. “There are so many strays everywhere here. It’s given me an opportunity to talk about spaying, neutering, heartworm prevention, and the reality of shelters. I think the dog coming along, and how everything unfolded with his rescue, is the perfect way to bring up those issues and teach them a better way to treat animals,” he says.

Today, Clive is still awaiting for a new forever home. For more information on adopting this sweet dog, please visit Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption’s website.
