One woman named Kay Jones along with her husband, have been dedicating a great part of their lives in one of the most noble deeds mankind could even bestow upon canines: they help house, treat and lovingly care for dogs on a temporary basis. The couple even helped to raise abandoned pups for an organization named Canine Companions for Independence, a place where the staff specifically trains pups to assist the physically disabled.

Currently raising their 13th puppy until it becomes old enough to enter advanced training, both Kay and Brad Jones met their first hospice foster by chance. After viewing a post on social media, one canine had caught Kay’s eye. The dog in the post was in his twilight years, but there was just something about him that Kay could not ignore. In addition, the dog was severely emaciated, mostly blind and had previously suffered some kind of trauma which crippled him for life.

Sickly Dog

Kay and Brad decided to open their home to him, even though that they knew he did not have much longer to live – he was due to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Despite his age, they named him Beau, a name derived from the French language – and it perfectly matched his beautiful yet gentle personality. Although Beau did not live with them for a long period, he nevertheless made a lasting impression on them.

Kay said that she and her husband had spent the last 10 days of Beau’s lifeline loving and spoiling him as much as they possibly could. Beau crossed the rainbow bridge in his sleep one morning, on a soft bed provided with love.

Beau’s memory lives on in the couple’s hearts after his death, and Kay’s heart need time to heal – until another named Mary Lou came.

Mary Lou had been surrendered to the couple in bad shape by her 100-year-old owner, who found it difficult to care for her dog. Mary Lou had an abundance of health issues and a terrible fungal skin infection which caused her severe balding on her back end and tail, plus frequent bouts of incessant itches. The poor dog also has several hematomas in both ears, which were a result of years of untreated ear infections! The local vet had originally estimated that Mar Lou is between 14 and 15 years old, but due to cross the rainbow bridge soon. Nevertheless, the couple opened their home to her for her final days.

Although Mary Lou wasn’t expected to live for long, but both Kay and Brad knew she wanted to live thus they paid for her extensive medical care. Mary Lou was placed on a course of both steroids and various supplements to help ease her arthritis pain and skin itch, along with a quality diet. After a month, the change in Mary Lou was astounding.

Mary Lou still living, and her condition continues to improve everyday! Within just a few days, Mary Lou went from getting around in a slowly trot to energetic runs, with her coat becoming all soft and shiny – she is now bright and energetic despite her age!

Kay happily reports that Mary Lou is walking so well that she frequently trots around the yard, which is a true miracle! Rescuing and housing old dogs is indeed, such a reward for the soul – especially in Beau’s and Mary Lou’s cases.
