According to the SPCA of Wake County, Toby first showed up on his family’s doorstep as a stray was soon taken in. Unfortunately, he did not get along with their family cats. His family soon decided that they didn’t want him anymore and gave him to another family. But Toby was too attached to his old family and escaped from his new home.

Toby then made the long journey back to his old family, walking an approximate distance of 12 miles! Instead of being touched by Toby’s devotion, his old family responded by bringing him to a shelter and asked them to euthanize him.
The shelter staff heard about Toby’s story and were against of him being euthanized, so they immediately contacted the SPCA for help. The SPCA staff arrived at the shelter quickly and brought Toby to the vet for a medical checkup. Toby was unfortunately diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and had an upper-respiratory infection, which took awhile to treat.
At the SPCA, Toby quickly warmed up to the staff but was not too fond of sharing a room with the other cats. Once Toby had made a full recovery, it was time for him to find a forever home. The SPCA posted a photo of Toby to spread the word and soon received numerous phone calls from potential adopters.
Michele Puckett from Raleigh in North Carolina rushed to the SPCA to meet Toby and had been in a job site when she heard about him. Much to her delight, Puckett got to bring Toby home on that day and introduced him to her family. Toby gets along with Puckett’s two family cats and loves to nap on her bed.
Toby’s story quickly went viral after his adoption, garnering millions of shares and likes worldwide. Puckett hopes that Toby’s story will raise awareness to the importance of adoption stating: “There are tons of pets who are easily discarded by their families or a breeder. I really hope he inspires other people to go out and adopt.”
