Maggie the Australian Kelpie is believed to be one of the, if not the oldest dog in the world. She passed away at the age of 30, which equates to 112 in dog years – small dogs typically live between 10 and 15 years. Maggie’s owner was a dairy farmer named Brian McLaren, who explained that Maggie’s health had started to suddenly decline about 2 days prior.

“She was 30 years old, she was still going along nicely last week, she was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing. She just went downhill in two days and I said yesterday morning when I went home for lunch.. She hasn’t got long now,” he says sadly.

Maggie snuggled up in her bed at night but passed on by the time her owner saw her in the morning. He had originally feared that he would have to put her down. Dear Maggie was buried under a pine tree, next to McLaren’s other dogs. She would be very dearly missed by him.

Maggie was one of the contenders for the title of ‘oldest dog in the world’, but McLaren lost her original paperwork thus her age could not be verified. Maggie rounded up the cows on the farm back then but retired 12 years before her death.

“She wasn’t pampered but she has well looked after. She always had milk — not too much of it, but she loved her milk — and anything else she’d wanted. She loved chasing the motorbike. When she was up and going she would want to run along beside it, so the faster you went, the quicker she would run. She had the greatest life,” McLaren added.

We would miss you too, Maggie!
