It’s always heartbreaking when a dog is surrendered to a shelter, but it’s even more so when it’s an older dog surrendered by their longtime owner.

These pets are suddenly upended from the only home they ever knew, and are often scared and confused in their new surroundings.

Now, one senior pup surrendered after 10 years is struggling to come to terms with his new situation — and needs a loving new home to make everything alright.Share

The Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County, in North Carolina, recently took in an “older gentleman” named Chico, who was surrendered by his owner after 10 years.

The shelter wrote that Chico is “confused with all the new change in his life” — and seems to think his former family will come back to save him.

“Every time a car would pull up in our driveway, he would be looking aggressively to try to get to that vehicle thinking it was his people coming back,” the Humane Society’s executive director Judy Sims told McClatchy News.

“We see this so often when people surrender their animals.”

Chico is now looking for a new family, one that will take the time to earn his trust and provide a “quiet and calm environment to settle in.”

“He quickly attaches to certain people and can often have choice words for others he doesn’t know,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “Chico is a guy that needs to build trust to feel safe, and we don’t blame him due to what he’s been through.”

They added that he would do best in a quiet home with no children or other animals, and that he was a real snuggle bug.

“Chico would love nothing more than a lap to snuggle up on all day or at least be by his person’s side… Chico loves to snuggle and has even spent an afternoon or two cuddled up on the desk in the office beside the person working.”

“He is going to be an awesome dog for somebody who is going to take some time, a few minutes, to get to know him and his personality,” Sims told McClatchy News.

If you are in the Concord area and are interested in adopting Chico, you can contact the Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County at (704) 784-7387 to make an appointment.

We can’t imagine the confusion and heartbreak Chico has been going through after being surrendered by the only family he’s ever known, and we hope he finds a great new home where he can spend his senior years!
