Dogs are forced to experience abandonment on an all too regular basis. Just imagine how you would feel if your parents took you from your childhood home and dropped you off without a worry or care. It would take a long time to get over the hurt. Over 6 million pets are forced to endure these circumstances each year. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is sharing these statistics in hopes of raising awareness.

Fortunately, a sizable number of these animals are eventually adopted. While at least half of these abandoned animals will have the chance to find new ones, this is not good enough. The other half is facing essentially insurmountable odds. If they are not given homes, they are eventually euthanized. This is heartbreaking news for any animal lover out there to consider.

This is what heartbreak looks like.

We all know that animal shelters are full of dogs that are in search of forever homes. Their owners are the ones who need to reconsider their actions. When an animal is abandoned, the owner is making a coin flip with their life. A New Mexico animal shelter recently decided to share a photo that brought this tragic line of thinking into much clearer focus.

“Happy Tails”.This sweet girl received a lot of attention today and was adopted. This is her shelter picture along with her freedom picture.

The photo was provided by the High Plains Humane Society. The dog had been left behind and was clearly very sad about it. The poor animal did not understand their circumstances and would cry on a regular basis. Humans can claim to know how terrible these stories are but they can never truly understand. The average person is simply never going to experience something this sad in their whole life.

Sometimes, it takes an image like this one to snap people out of their careless ways. Hopefully, this inspires at least one owner who is considering abandonment to think better of it. Yes, dogs cannot cry in the same manner as humans. This photo probably indicates that the dog is experiencing issues with their eyes. A medical issue is what is causing the “crying”.

Adopted.

However, that does not change the reality of what is taking place. This poor pooch has been left to deal with the cold world on their own and they are beyond saddened by their situation. The photo did its job, though. The shelter received plenty of requests about her situation and it did not take long before she was adopted. Please share this image with your closest friends and loved ones.
