Long before modernity, both service dogs for veterans and humans have been linked together with the bonds of companionship, loyalty and trust. As we age alongside them, canines are loyal animals who would choose to stay by our side but yet, actually expect very little in return. They would eventually grow up to become important members of our families, taking on the role of a guardian, protector or confidante. As owners, we too would try our best to provide them with a fulfilling life with lots of tender loving care.

Companionship is, perhaps most valuable thing that dogs provide us with. Once separated from them, we would feel a sense of loneliness and longing for our canines. Especially one man named Larry Peteet, who had to get his 8-year-old Labrador Retriever Sandy back after recovering from a car accident. However, the fault was not his – he trusted Sandy with the wrong person.

Larry Peteet was an Air Force veteran hailing from Land O’ Lakes, Florida. After a serious car accident caused by his heart condition, Larry had to check into the ICU for 3 days. Someone from the Pasco County Fire Rescue asked him before his surgery on what he wanted to do with Sandy. Larry proceeded to name a neighbor whom he thought could look after her. After being assured that Sandy was fine, a very much relieved Larry focused on recovering from the incident – but it was not meant to be.

After contacting the neighbor whom he had named, Larry was told that Sandy was with the Pasco County Animal Services, and not with the neighbor! After his visit had turned out fruitless, Larry drove down to the Pet Resource Center located in Hillsborough County. But Sandy was not there either. Larry was frantic and desperate to find Sandy, even calling up multiple animal shelters asking for her.

His search proved to be worthwhile, as one deputy from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office informed him that another neighbor was entrusted with Sandy when the first neighbor could not. However, Sandy was then given away to a stranger at a local dog park who also owned a black Labrador.

Larry played detective until he got word on Sandy’s location. After 22 days, Larry managed to contact the man in question, who told him that Sandy was named as an abandoned dog – thus, he took her in. After hearing the news about missing Sandy, his boss advised him to contact Larry to pick her up – and it was a touching sight to see!
