In Australia, a Chihuahua-Maltese mix named Martha was picked up as a stray and sent to an overcrowded rural shelter. However, the shelter that Martha was sent to was a high kill one. There, the staff believed that putting Martha down was the best thing for her as she looked “unadoptable” and arranged for her to be shot.

Thankfully, Pets Haven Animal Shelter heard about Martha and immediately intervened at the very last minute. Rescuers from Pets Haven Animal Shelter went to pick up Martha and quickly brought her to the vet for medical help. At the vet, it turns out that Martha suffered more than just fur loss and skin problems.

Martha also suffered from dry eye syndrome, a severe heart murmur and complete deafness. Due to the amount of cost and care that Martha needed, it was no wonder that the staff at the high kill shelter deemed her as “unadoptable”. One of the vets, Bianca Stockley, took a liking to Martha and brought her home.

Under Stockley’s foster care, Martha’s condition improved after a few weeks. Not only her fur started to grow back, she is also happily learning what it feels like to have a family. According to Stockley, Martha enjoys wandering around the clinic and welcoming every guest like an unofficial mascot.

Martha also enjoys begging for chicken nuggets and cuddling with her 2 foster siblings, Daisy and Fat Carlos. Stockley also added that out of all the animals that she has fostered, Martha is the most special one to her.
